Covid vs. Menopause
Night sweats, depression, panic, weight gain, headaches, creepy crawly skin… Are these symptoms of menopause, or are they side effects of covid? Don’t hate me because I’m over 40.
A 15-minute monologue with video projection, this performance unpacks menopause as experienced by a queer middle-aging female body using storytelling, video, image, and sound clips, humour, and parody.
Although conversations about menopause are becoming more prevalent in mainstream and queer culture, menopause is still a mystery. How does it start? What does it do? How does it work? How long does it last? I also confuse menopausal symptoms with covid symptoms as a ludicrous way to reveal how little we know about menopause while unpacking the current global pandemic and how each manifest on the body. What do those hot flashes mean? Is it menopause or is it covid?
Originally commissioned for Centaur Theatre’s Portico Project (Sept 24-Oct 4 2020), which was shut down after 2 performances after Montreal went into Red Alert because of the Covid pandemic.
