My Desert Hearts…(video essay trailer)
Made at Middlebury video essay camp (Scholarship in Sound and Image Workshop on Videographic Criticism) June 2022
Trailer exercise: create a videographic abstract trailer that features both the scholarly abstract—subject and critical approach—and the motion picture trailer—style and tone for a trailer to your video essay. Make people want to see your final project!
I had a lot of fun with this assignment. I focused on the ‘make people want to see your final video essay’ objective, and for inspiration and form watched a lot of 80s trailers for movies like Porky’s, Revenge of the Nerds, Weird Science, and Weekend at Bernie’s where the objective seems to be for teenage boys to see boobs. For my trailer, I leaned into the lesbian exploitation angle to show how ridiculous this is, especially for a film that is such a sincere queer classic, and not a bikini comedy.
