Catherine Deneuve kisses an extremely old and unrecognizable David Bowie in The Hunger.

You said forever (video essay exercise)

Made at Middlebury video essay camp (Scholarship in Sound and Image Workshop on Videographic Criticism) June 2024

For this Epigraph exercise, I used The Hunger (Tony Scott, 1983). I was struck by how the start of the film centres John Blaylock (played by David Bowie) and what he wants, while presenting him as dependent on Miriam (played by Catherine Deneuve) as he rapidly ages. Scott figures this aging as disgusting and revolting, and I wanted to amplify this characterization through absurdity, thus the collage of kiss-themed songs.

Thank you campers!
