Thelma Louise: ‘every time they touch’ Supercut (vide essay exercise)

Made at Embodying the Video Essay camp, July 2023
Supercut mini-assignment: What is embodiment? How does embodiment manifest in your project? Based on your understanding of and interest in embodiment, create a supercut from your media object(s) that communicates embodiment.

We started camp off with showing the results of this mini-assignment that campers had made in the month beforehand. A supercut is a really great way to review your media object, as well as introduce others to how you are thinking with and about it.

I started off this supercut thinking I wanted to collect instances of characters touching each other. However, because I didn’t want to re-show any part of the attempted rape scene, I started cutting out all of the men and focused on when Thelma and Louise touch each other. My close examination revealed non-sexualized touches of care, affection, sharing, encouragement, and withdrawal.
